Grandpa’s A Really Good Guy,
Oh My!

Grandpa’s a really good guy.
He knows how to make a kid fly.
He fills up his jeanses
with bright jelly beanses
My heart is most pleased and blessed by family and family relationship poems, for they are closest to my heart. Some of these offerings are funny, moving, nostalgic, or religious. Others are more complex, refusing (as families themselves do) to fit neatly under any one characterization. My poems value the complexity of every family relationship and respect those who honor and uphold it. I hope you find something that resonates with you here. May the poems evoke feelings (delightful and occasionally less so) that we all associate with being part of a family.

We’re picking out a Christmas tree.
Oh boy, I just can’t wait!
December 25th is near––
It’s time to celebrate.
To see her hands
their beauty weave
restored my faith
made my heart conceive
Don’t mess with me
Don’t crowd my space
You’re in my way
You’re in my face
My best friend is a live oak tree.
His branches shade and shelter me.
Beneath these arms of green, each day,
I come to sit and read and play.
The greatest joy in life is found
where love and loyalty abound.
What sweeter sight…what dearer sound
than all the family, gathered round?
My little brother copies me.
He does just what I do.
He lugs around a baseball bat
and wears my shinguards too.
When baby brother took a bath,
I used to get in, too.
I’d help my mommy hold him up
while he got his shampoo.
