In God’s Own Time

A man and woman love, they mate,
and from that union, they create
a temple for God’s spirit child
entrusted to their care.
A body, subject to the laws
of earth, and thereby to the flaws
and imperfections that are part
of life in this domain.
And yes, as Nature takes the part
of trying our Creator’s art,
sometimes She fails, but knowing
God’s design, She tries again.
The wait feels long and hard on earth
to parents eager for the birth.
In heaven, Nature’s efforts seem
the twinkling of an eye.
Accepting what was meant to be,
God’s spirit child waits patiently
to join the man and woman
who will be his earthly parents.
Until the time when all is right,
when body and spirit at last unite
as the Lord entrusts into their care
the baby they were called to bear.

I wrote this poem many years ago to comfort my sister, who was grieving a miscarriage. We were young, but I wanted so much to help her, to let her know how deeply I cared, and to give her hope. I had never suffered such a loss, but my love for her brought me a measure of understanding beyond my own experience. In God’s Own Time is the simple poem that came to me, offered in innocence, from the heart. Looking back, I feel a tenderness for the young woman who wrote them and the even younger woman who received them. The baby did come, along with two others. I hope the same for all couples who want so much to be parents, even when it doesn’t come easily.
