In God’s Own Time

A man and woman love, they mate,
and from that union, they create
a temple for God’s spirit child
entrusted to their care.
A body, subject to the laws
of earth, and thereby to the flaws
and imperfections that are part
of life in this domain.
As Nature takes her sacred part
in plying our Creator’s art,
sometimes she fails, but true to
God’s design, she tries again.
The wait, so wearying on earth
to parents eager for the birth
seems long, but Father’s blessings
must come forth in His own time.
Full knowing what was meant to be,
one spirit child waits patiently
to join the man and woman
who will be his earthly parents . . .
Until that day when all is right,
when body and spirit at last unite
as God commends into their care
the baby they were called to bear.

I wrote this poem many years ago to comfort my sister, who was grieving a miscarriage. We were young, but I wanted so much to help her, let her know how deeply I cared, and give her hope. I had never suffered such a loss, but my love for her brought me a measure of understanding beyond my own experience. In God’s Own Time is the simple poem that came to me, offered in innocence, from the heart. Looking back, I feel a tenderness for the young woman who wrote these words and the even younger woman who received them. The baby did come, along with two others. I hope the same for all couples who want so much to be parents, even when it doesn’t come easily.
