Angels Watch – and Wait

When Todd is watching me, I hope he sees
more things that please than things that give him pause.
I would not cause him grief – that’s my domain –
but surely human pain feels softer there,
where earth and flesh and loss no longer reign.

Our angels care for us with hearts made strong.
God’s truths belong to them. Here, we but feel.
His truth is real and yet, hard to retain
when struggles seem, at times, in vain on earth
and weakness a condition of our birth.

Still, that same birth remains God’s greatest gift.
This life (that tries us) lifts us to the stars.
The heavens ours, we strive with faith and might
to reach God’s loving light, now veiled and dimmed.
Yet earth is fleeting, heaven’s antonym.

And so the time will come – I’ll hold my son –
the soul that flew, the one who leads the way.
I pray Todd’s works and watchings may be joyful
as, steadfastly, he waits to see us Home . . .
where we will dwell with God, souls fully grown.
