LOVE IS A BRAID

image by Tamara Bellis on Unsplash

Stranded we are –
lone shafts of golden grain,
bowing and weaving,
laid low by wind and rain –
raised to bright sky.

The waves of days
stretch out along a
shimmering field of life,
preparing for the scythe
of passing years.

Sunshine and tears,
full moons and fears
surround us –
and all around us,
signs of things to come.

The harvest waits.
We tremble, and we dance.
Alone, but not undone,
we meet the storm.
We conquer chance.

The gathering comes;
our amber stalks are cut.
We are cut free.
Each wound rendering us as
we need to be.

And love, the mending force,
weaves us as one,
bright strands of light
together, finely made.
Blessed. Unafraid.

Love is a braid.

This poem is a heartfelt and somewhat reverential nod to Paul Simon and his 7 Psalms selection, “Love Is Like a Braid.” If you enjoyed reading this, you might also relate to “Hold Your People Close.”
