In Defense of Weeds
©1993 Susan Noyes Anderson
I’d like to say a word for weeds,
brave victims of mad plowers.
Why must their sturdy lives give way
to frail, elitist flowers?
Welcome to my collection of original nature poems. Everyone needs a “happy place,” and nature happens to be mine. That’s why I’m making these nature poems available online. They offer readers a chance to explore and commune with the great outdoors, even when they can’t be there personally! These poems also make wonderful gifts, cards, and meditations. Please remember to email a request to me before using one of my nature poems. Include full copyright information on every copy made. (For internet use, a link back to the poem on this site is required.)

I’d like to say a word for weeds,
brave victims of mad plowers.
Why must their sturdy lives give way
to frail, elitist flowers?
What is this thing that draws me to the sea?
What passion rises with each white-capped swell
to churn upon a watery carousel
and break in frothy secrets, spilling free?
A child is playing in the sand.
What secrets does he understand?
He knows the magic of the sea.
The evidence is in his hand.
Bare branches,
gnarled, athritic fingers,
reaching, groping,
which way out?
The hummingbird outside my window flies
to drink of bougainvillea wine each day,
enticed by rich, magenta-colored prey
to claim the sweetest nectar as her prize.
Oh tree, whose barren limb no comfort gives,
Whose nakedness no calming color brings,
cover in blossoms every soul that lives
and nest, in every heart, a bird that sings.
High on the mountain’s rocky crest,
an eagle soars to make its nest––
surrounded by nature’s majesty,
riding the wind so strong and free.
The dawn in a nightgown of glistening dew
Arouses the sun from her beauty sleep,
To paint from a palette of every hue
A sky that enchants us from slumber deep.
