The Tree in Me

Plant all my roots in rich brown earth
and stretch my branches wide.
Let golden rays of morning sun
fill every space inside.
Welcome to my collection of original nature poems. Everyone needs a “happy place,” and nature happens to be mine. That’s why I am making these nature poems available, to give poetry lovers a chance to explore and commune with the great outdoors, even when they have to stay inside. These poems make wonderful gifts, cards, and meditations…but please remember to email a request to me and include full copyright information on every copy made. (For internet use, a link back to the poem on this site is required.)

Plant all my roots in rich brown earth
and stretch my branches wide.
Let golden rays of morning sun
fill every space inside.
Take me to the mountain crest
along a winding trail.
Let the sweet air fill my chest;
lift me like a sail.
Their roots were in the land;
the land was everything.
The old ones took a stand,
inured to suffering.
I’ll take my snow behind a window, please.
Let it fall freely past the frosty pane,
whilst I sit in my parlor quite at ease,
boots dry, exempt from sidewalk, stairs, and lane.
Sometimes my heart is washed in tears,
or overcome by foolish fears,
but most days find me safe from harm
with all I need to keep me warm.

How do you like to go up in a swing?
Pump your legs or be pushed?
Take it slow or take wing?
How beautifully leaves grow old.
In glory, they slip away.
I want to say
the worth of a puddle
is in the scenery it reflects.
