New Year’s Revelation

A new year for an altered life––
I guess it does seem fitting.
2018 hit us hard,
its sorrows unremitting.
Friends tell me we have “had our share.”
This new year should be great.
But while I hope my friends are right,
I have to hesitate.
My earthly view is patterned now
by threads of unmatched hues.
The truth is in the tapestry,
dark strands I did not choose.
And yet, it seems that they are mine,
so I must weave them in.
No doubt 2019 is
a good time to begin.
I plan to make it right somehow,
embrace it and believe;
but God will choose the threads I use.
All I can do is weave.
May this year shimmer silk and gold
to make life’s fabric shine,
with just enough of sterner stuff
my spirit to refine.
