Secrets

Closed book am I,
cover-only showing;
all bound and stitched
up tight against
the knowing.
Print smeared and running
free across the pages,
corraled by seams and
fabric sewn in
stages.
I wrap it all up
carefully inside;
not even the mirror
sees the parts
I hide.

Rene Magritte said, “My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, ‘What does that mean?’ It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing, it is unknowable.”
“Man is not what he thinks he is; he is what he hides.” – Andre Malraux
“We dance round in a ring and suppose, but the secret sits in the middle and knows.” – Robert Frost
“Nothing makes us so lonely as our secrets.” – Paul Tournier
