My roots are planted,
but they’re running fallow,
too shallow for the work
I need to do.

My roots are planted,
but they’re running fallow,
too shallow for the work
I need to do.
We build ourselves just like a house
in this sojourn on earth.
Creatively, we’ve got the skills –
a blessing of our birth.
I’m doing some restructuring
I thought I’d done already.
And yet this house, however loved,
is holding less than steady.
A quiet room, a sterile room,
cold womb for the unwilling.
I sat there feeling quite alone,
my cup of sorrow filling.
I’m attracted to cairns, and
I think I know why.
I do love a good rock, and these
point toward the sky.
The foundation is solid, a
wide, flat, smooth stone –
placed and chosen with care
to bear weight on its own.
woke up this morning
clothed in gray
world dressed down
to shade my way
In days of yore, the pilgrims walked The Way
to show their piety, their love of God.
They took their sins and burdens, seeking grace,
renewing faith on every path they trod.
I’m well aware that you’re not here,
a little too aware, I fear;
and yet, neither are you quite gone,
despite the truth that you’ve passed on.
The sun fell out of the sky one day.
I propped her up on a flow of words.
She hung in a rather precarious way,
fluttered about like a wind-tossed bird.
