first love – first home
It was early days, year one.
Two dreamers at the
gate of wedded bliss.

It was early days, year one.
Two dreamers at the
gate of wedded bliss.
Stand beside me.
Make me stretch
my branches high,
transcend the morning sky
with me; don’t count
my rings and ridges.
“Italian wedding soup,” she said.
It sounded such a treat.
I’d married her one year ago;
my bliss was quite complete.
I love you like the ocean’s roar.
In fact, I love you even more.
Yes, every stupifying snore.
I love the wind between your lips.
Your exhale doesn’t sigh; it rips.
(The breeze it blows could sink warships.)
It was Charleston in the fall,
no other bodies there to bend
the energy, just you and me (us…we),
begetting child-free memories to own.
Hold me down when I feel flighty.
Lift me up when I’m earthbound.
When in doubt, just take a chance and
swing this partner round and round.

I am yours and you are mine,
grown together on the vine
of life and love and days well spent,
formed and fed by blessings sent:
I hope you’ll listen to my take
on how to find a mate.
My vision is unique and wise.
My counsel is first-rate.
