Easter: The Spring of Hope
©2015 Susan Noyes Anderson
Come, celebrate the joys of spring,
bright days of reawakening,
when spirits rise from winter long
to soar on wings of sweet birdsong.
As a poet who loves Easter and everything (sacred or secular) that it represents, I couldn’t resist the chance to drop a few of these Easter poems in your basket to see if you feel the same way I do about this wonderful season of renewal. Come, celebrate the joys of spring,
bright days of reawakening,
when spirits rise from winter long
to soar on wings of sweet birdsong.
When all about me seems to dim
and colors change to muted gray,
I turn my mind and heart to Him
who carries worldly woes away.
Humble yourself as a little child
and crawl into the nest.
With barren head and unshod feet
draw peace into your breast.
The gift is blood and sacrifice
to free us all from sin.
The prize is God’s own kingdom,
ours to shun or enter in.
Leather sandals, dusty feet,
soles worn out in service.
Lessons taught, lessons learned;
stilled souls waiting, nervous.
To bathe soiled feet was but a servant’s lot,
eschewed by men whose station lent them grace.
These did not stoop to take a lowly place,
nor pause to wonder if, one day, they ought.
ignoring Lent
was never meant
the message simply wasn’t sent
Gethsemane brought Jesus to His knees.
“Remove this cup from me,” He dared to ask.
His humble prayer, “Thy will, not mine, be done,”
allowed no respite from the fearsome task.
