Her eyes look past the window pane,
beyond the shutters and the years.
She hears the laughing children, sees
but does not see them through her tears.

A ray of sunlight warms her cheek;
her lips know well the taste of rain.
The window of her spirit opens
wide upon this mother’s pain.
