He watched, aloof, as other men built bridges…
eschewed their trust in girders, planks and beams.
Foundations always cracked for him or crumbled.
(Proof nothing strong is ever as it seems.)

He peered from shadows, most of his own making,
cursed careless hearts that dared to let him down,
decried the better life he was forsaking,
and labeled bridges one more way to drown.
